Hijiri Bridge
Completed in 1927, this steel-reinforced concrete arch bridge spans the Kanda River between Chiyoda and Bunkyo wards. An Arch Between Two Sacred Buildings
Hijiri Bridge (Hijiribashi) spans the Kanda River where the old Hongo Road crosses the waterway between Chiyoda and Bunkyo wards. Completed in 1927 as part of the post-earthquake reconstruction of Tokyo, it is a steel-reinforced concrete arch bridge with a total length of 79.3 meters, a width of 22.0 meters, and a clear arch span of 36.3 meters over the river. The bridge was one of many crossings rebuilt by the Ministry of the Interior’s Reconstruction Bureau in the years following the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923.
Its name came from a public competition. On the south bank stands Nikolai Cathedral — the Russian Orthodox cathedral in Surugadai, Chiyoda Ward, with its distinctive verdigris Byzantine dome. On the north bank stands Yushima Seido, a Confucian shrine that traces its origins to the Tokugawa shogunate’s academy of learning. “Hijiri,” meaning “holy” or “sacred,” was chosen to encompass both a Christian cathedral and a Confucian hall — an elegant compression of two very different traditions into a single character. In 2007 the bridge was designated a Chiyoda Ward Scenic Townscape Heritage site, and in 2017 it received recognition as a JSCE Civil Engineering Heritage.
The Parabola That Solved a Hard Site
Architectural design was entrusted to Yamada Mamoru, a founding member of the Secessionist architectural group Bunriha Kenchiku-kai, whose expressive approach shaped the bridge’s ornamental details. Structural design fell to the civil engineer Naruse Katsutake. Naruse chose a parabolic arch rib that minimizes horizontal thrust at the bridge piers — a rational solution for the canyon-like terrain carved by the Kanda River through the Hongo uplands. The construction method — encasing a steel skeleton in concrete — produced what was reportedly described at the time as one of the world’s largest steel-reinforced concrete arch bridges.
Standing on the bridge and looking toward Ochanomizu Station, visitors can see three rail lines crossing in layers: JR Chuo Line, JR Sobu Line, and Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line. Trains on all three sometimes converge simultaneously just upstream — a scene beloved by railway photographers across Japan. Here, civil engineering from the 1920s and the city’s present-day transit network overlap at a single point, making Hijiri Bridge one of Tokyo’s most layered urban vistas.
