A Landmark Tower Above Sendai Station

Standing directly above the west exit of JR Sendai Station, AER (pronounced “ayer”) is one of the most visible structures in the Tohoku region. The tower was completed in March 1998, rising 145.5 metres over 31 floors above ground and three below, with a total floor area of approximately 93,000 square metres. Oka Sekkei handled the architectural design, delivering a slender white curtain-wall tower that anchors the city’s main transport node.

The lower floors hold retail and dining tenants, while the upper floors are occupied by offices. At the very top, the 31st-floor observation terrace — called “AERO360°” — is open to the public free of charge. On clear days, visitors can take in the Sendai Plain stretching to the east, the volcanic Zao range to the west, and, in ideal conditions, a sliver of the Pacific on the horizon. Few urban observation decks in Japan offer both mountain and ocean prospects from a single vantage point.

Sendai’s High-Rise Cluster

AER sits at the centre of a cluster of towers that transformed Sendai Station’s surroundings from the late 1990s onwards. To the south, SS30 (Sendai Daiichi Seimei Tower Building) rises to nearly 180 metres, and the Sendai Trust Tower adds a further tall accent to the skyline. The three towers, along with the underground shopping mall and elevated pedestrian decks that link them, form a compact urban precinct well suited to a city where snow and cold make covered connections a practical necessity for months of the year.

Summary

Sendai AER was completed in 1998 — 31 floors and 145.5 metres of mixed retail, offices, and a free public observation deck, all woven into the fabric of the region’s largest railway station. For a city built at the foot of the mountains and the edge of a wide coastal plain, it serves as a natural first viewpoint: arrive by Shinkansen, step into the lift, and look out over both horizons at once.
