Tamagawa Sky Bridge

A 675-metre composite rigid-frame bridge opened in March 2022, linking Haneda Global Wings in Ota City with Kawasaki's King Sky Front cluster across the Tama River. Its maximum span of 240 metres is the longest for this bridge type in Japan. Open to pedestrians and cyclists, it created a ten-minute crossing between two major innovation districts.

A Ten-Minute Bridge Between Two Innovation Zones

The Tamagawa Sky Bridge opened on 12 March 2022 as a 675-metre road bridge across the lower Tama River. It links Haneda Global Wings — a large-scale industry-creation district developed on former Haneda Airport land in Ota City — with King Sky Front in Kawasaki’s Tonomachi district, a concentrated cluster of life-science and advanced-technology enterprises. Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Kawasaki City co-funded the project, sharing equally the cost of the bridge structure (approximately ¥26 billion of the roughly ¥30 billion total).

The main span structure is a composite rigid-frame design: steel superstructure and reinforced-concrete piers are rigidly joined, forming a continuous system 602.2 metres long across the river. The maximum span of 240 metres is the longest for this bridge type in Japan. The standard deck width of 17.3 metres accommodates two traffic lanes alongside a dedicated path for cyclists and pedestrians. Before the bridge opened, reaching the other bank required a detour via Daishi Bridge; after opening, the crossing became a ten-minute walk.

Closing the Gap Between Haneda and Kawasaki

The two districts connected by the bridge each anchor distinct clusters of economic activity. On the Ota City side, Haneda Global Wings repurposes former airport land into a base for international research, prototyping and commercialisation. On the Kawasaki side, King Sky Front is a dense cluster where pharmaceutical, medical-device and biotech firms operate alongside research institutions in Tonomachi. Kawasaki’s mayor described the bridge as “infrastructure to generate the next hundred years of industry.”

From the pedestrian and cycle path, arriving aircraft appear at close range on one side while the open Tama River estuary stretches away on the other — a vantage point that few spots near Tokyo replicate. The bridge has become part of daily commuter routes, weaving itself into the rhythm of both districts.

Summary

The Tamagawa Sky Bridge — 675 metres long, maximum span 240 metres, opened March 2022 — spans the Tama River mouth to join Haneda Global Wings and King Sky Front as Japan’s longest composite rigid-frame bridge. Pedestrians and cyclists may cross at any time, and the view of arriving aircraft from the deck is an experience unique to this stretch of waterway.
