A Shipper’s Address in the Heart of Kasumigaseki

Iino Building stands at 2-1-1 Uchisaiwaicho, Chiyoda City — the corner plot where Kasumigaseki’s government quarter fades into the business streets heading toward Shimbashi. Completed in 2011, the tower rises 27 floors and 147 meters above ground, with five basement levels. Iino Kaiun Kaisha, a shipping and real estate company founded in 1917, owns and occupies the building. Takenaka Corporation led the design and construction, with Nikken Sekkei providing design supervision.

The building replaces its 1960 predecessor on the same lot. That earlier tower, completed as Japan entered its high-growth era, served Iino Kaiun for half a century before age and seismic concerns prompted a rebuild. The new tower is substantially taller than its predecessor, expanding usable floor area while maintaining the company’s presence at a central Tokyo address the firm has held for decades.

When a Shipping Company Holds a Skyscraper

In central Tokyo, corporate buildings are often the clearest record of a company’s history and ambitions. Iino Kaiun’s decision to rebuild rather than sell — and to construct a taller, more modern building — reflects both the enduring value of Uchisaiwaicho land and the company’s continued stake in Tokyo real estate. The neighborhood is sandwiched between the Kasumigaseki government complex and the Shiodome media district, meaning this building sits where ministries, broadcasters, trading houses, and shipping firms share the same few blocks.

Summary

Completed in 2011, Iino Building is a 27-story, 147-meter office tower in Uchisaiwaicho, Chiyoda City. Built by Iino Kaiun Kaisha as its corporate headquarters, it replaced a 1960 predecessor on the same corner plot and embodies the wave of central-Tokyo corporate rebuild projects of the 2000s and 2010s. Walking from Kasumigaseki toward Shimbashi, the building marks the boundary between Japan’s administrative center and its commercial one.
