Rising above Nihonbashi

A short walk from Tokyo Station toward Nihonbashi, construction fencing gives way to the unmistakable presence of a nearly complete skyscraper: Nihonbashi Nomura Mitsui Tower, the centerpiece of a new development named Tokyo Midtown Nihonbashi. Rising 52 floors above ground and five below, the building reaches approximately 284 meters, placing it — upon completion — second only to Azabudai Hills Mori JP Tower among Tokyo’s tallest structures. The project is driven by Mitsui Fudosan, Nomura Real Estate, and Nomura Holdings through the Nihonbashi Ichome Chiku redevelopment association. Structural completion is scheduled for September 2026, with the grand opening of commercial and hotel spaces slated for autumn 2027.

A Vertical City above the Nihonbashi District

The building’s total floor area reaches approximately 374,800 square meters, stacking offices, retail, hotel, residences, and MICE facilities into a single tower — a density of use that defines the Tokyo Midtown model. Design is led by Nikken Sekkei, with Pelli Clarke & Partners serving as design architect, and construction is being carried out by a joint venture headed by Shimizu Corporation. The Tokyo Midtown Nihonbashi name is the fourth under that banner, following Akasaka, Hibiya, and Yaesu. Each project has reshaped a central Tokyo district; this one takes on one of the last large sites in Nihonbashi, a district with an unbroken commercial history stretching back to the Edo period.

Summary

Nihonbashi Nomura Mitsui Tower is a 52-story, approximately 284-meter skyscraper completing in 2026 as the core of the Tokyo Midtown Nihonbashi development. Designed by Nikken Sekkei and Pelli Clarke & Partners and led by Mitsui Fudosan, Nomura Real Estate, and Nomura Holdings, it will stand as Tokyo’s second-tallest building and bring a new vertical city to the historic heart of Nihonbashi. The grand opening is set for autumn 2027. Even before the doors open, the scale of the tower is already clear from street level — a compelling reason to walk this part of the city now and again after the project is complete.
