The “Triangle Building”

Nishi-Shinjuku, Shinjuku City, Tokyo. In 1974, an office building of 52 floors and a height of 210.3 meters was completed. This is the Shinjuku Sumitomo Building. With its triangular floor plan, it is affectionately known as the “Triangle Building” and is instantly recognizable even among the skyscrapers of West Shinjuku.

Among a cluster of high-rises mostly made up of rectangular boxes, a triangular plan stands out. Because it shows a different outline from every direction, the same building catches your eye with a different face as you walk the streets. The shape itself adds variation to the cityscape.

A space held within

This building is known for the large atrium it holds inside its triangular form. Beyond the distinctive shape visible from outside, a characteristic space is also prepared within — giving the design a depth that goes beyond mere novelty.

It was built early in the period when West Shinjuku was being transformed from a former water-plant site into a high-rise district. Thanks to the individuality of its form, it remains one of the more memorable buildings of that generation.
