Hatsudai, Nishi-Shinjuku, Shinjuku City, Tokyo. In 1996, a tower of 54 floors and a height of about 234 meters was completed. This is the Tokyo Opera City Tower. Together with the adjacent New National Theatre, it is the core skyscraper of a mixed-use development integrated with cultural facilities such as a concert hall and an art gallery.

By erecting a tower of this scale in Hatsudai, an area slightly west of the center of West Shinjuku, the reach of the Shinjuku subcenter extended toward Hatsudai. A composition that carries office functions while spreading cultural facilities at its feet defines the character of this building.

Where a place to work and a place to listen overlap

What makes this tower distinctive is that, while being an office building, the district as a whole encloses places to enjoy music and art. Rather than a stand-alone business tower, a cultural hub and a workplace coexist within the same district.
