149 Meters of Retail, Hotel, and Parking above Osaka Station
Yodobashi Umeda Tower rises at Ofuka-cho 1-1, Kita Ward, Osaka — directly north of JR Osaka Station, standing shoulder to shoulder with the towers of Grand Front Osaka. Completed in October 2019, the building was developed by Yodobashi Holdings and both designed and built by Penta-Ocean Construction. It reaches 35 floors above ground, four below, and stands 149.34 meters tall, with a total floor area of 109,805 square meters.
The lower and middle floors operate as LINKS UMEDA, a large retail complex anchored by a flagship Yodobashi Camera store that ranks among the largest consumer electronics floor areas in Japan. Above the retail levels, from the 19th to the 34th floor, the tower houses Hotel Hankyu Respire Osaka, a high-rise hotel whose upper-floor rooms offer panoramic views across the Umeda skyline and beyond. The tower is also connected to a standalone multi-story parking structure, allowing the complex to absorb large volumes of visitors arriving by car.
The Final Piece of the Kita Umeda Jigsaw
Yodobashi Umeda Tower sits at the western edge of the “Umekita” redevelopment district — the former Osaka freight terminal yards transformed after Japan’s railway reforms. Its neighbor to the east, Grand Front Osaka — also built above the old railyards and completed in 2013 — rises to 179.5 meters with three towers of its own. Together the two complexes define the northern face of Osaka Station and account for much of the area’s transformation from freight marshalling yard to metropolitan hub.
Yodobashi Camera’s decision to anchor the project reflects a strategy of concentrating inventory and floor space in high-density urban centers. Opening in 2019, the tower completed a lineup of development that now lines the north side of Osaka Station from the station’s central concourse to the far edge of Ofuka-cho.
Summary
Completed in October 2019, Yodobashi Umeda Tower stands 35 floors and 149.34 meters above Ofuka-cho in Osaka’s Kita Ward. Developed by Yodobashi Holdings and designed and built by Penta-Ocean Construction, it packages LINKS UMEDA retail, Hotel Hankyu Respire Osaka, and a parking structure into a single 109,805 square-meter tower. The building marks a natural endpoint in the transformation of the former Osaka freight yards — a short walk from JR Osaka Station that reshapes what a big-box electronics retailer can look like in the city.
